Want to make a simple air hockey table that is a fraction of the price of the ones in the stores, here is how you do it!

With all the football craze of World Cup 2018 I decided to make an air hockey table since I already had the battery operated ball and pucks (Fig. 1).

My many visits to the local Ikea store gave me the bright idea to use their furniture pieces for the table. I chose the table top (39″ x 23″) and 4 metal legs which all came to a grand total of only $25. All I needed now were some edging to prevent the ball from falling off the table. I found some rigid plastic pieces lying around (it’s amazing what you can find around the house) which I cut to size and screwed onto the edges as shown (Fig. 2). Attach the legs and add some colorful decoration and you have yourself an air hockey table that is a fraction of the cost found in stores.

The final product looked great and playing on it was real fun (Fig. 3).

It was pretty amazing to see the ball hover after it was turned on and made a slight (not distracting) buzzing sound. It glided across the table with little effort and the plastic edges had some bounce which added to the fun factor. I plan on on using this ‘table’ base from Ikea to make more projects including a train-set, game table ie. carom board etc.

Hope you have fun making it, but let me know if you have any questions by using the comments box below.
